For all you chain lovers, sacsearcher.com now does alerts for CL.

I think it's an issue with their shipping calculator, I've notice that on ebay I get this really weird shipping costs with their calculators.

For the wheels, UPS is cheapest around 20-30 dollars for the Lower48. However I think USPS Parcel Post would be cheapest for going outside the country. Though I don't think BC/SC/CL offer this option. You could email or call, they are uber good about helping you about this kind of stuff.

Falchoon, there's no way it should cost them $170 to ship a pair of socks. With a flat rate priority envelope to australia, it should cost about $12

You might want to get into live chat again and talk to someone else and tell them their international shipping calculator seems to be fubarred and see if they'll listen.

falchoon,

If you order an item and you go immediately over to backcountry.com and you get into online chat - You can discuss the actual shipping cost of the item with one of the backcountry csr's and to see whether or not they can adjust it.

If they can't adjust it and it's something ridiculous like 300 for a pair of wheels - then you can tell them to cancel your order.

There just shouldn't be a delay between you placing the order and talking to them.

If you don't want to do it like that, you can go over there first and ask them about the shipping costs.

$300 for a pair of wheels does sound excessive - but there may be oversized freight charges that they're taking into consideration?

I couldn't find a post on GA where shipping is discussed - I looked for a while yesterday. All I know is that some of our Canadian friends have to use package forwarding services because many stores won't ship to Canada. Maybe someone could make a post over on GA and see if they get a reply

I'm still here, flogging a dead horse...
Sent an email to Cl and got the following prompt reply -

Hey Falchoon, Thanks for contacting ChainLove.com-what took you so long? Believe it or not, this is actually a discounted price. We do not ask the customer to pay full price for shipping as split the shipping costs on all shipping options with the customer. The price from UPS is even higher. For an item as small as tubes, you would be much better buying them locally. With gas prices the way they are, I live in the same city as the warehouse and it was going to cost a hair over $17 to ship a set of non-folding tires to my house. And, that was ground shipping, non-expedited! Sorry for the shipping prices. Maybe if a certain country (mine) would stop bombing oil producing countries, the prices would begin to drop again. I know business would pick up when we could help our international customers at more reasonable rates! If you have any additional questions or concerns, just let us know and we'll get right on it. For now, get out there and ride—we'll be here in the ChainLove laboratory concocting another deal. Please use this link to rate the response you received in this email. https://sales.liveperson.net/hc/s-9551721/web/ticketpub/feedbackController.jsp?tid=LTK42103031967X&mid=100217160 Thanks, Adam B. So basically they seem to be blaming UPS and high fuel prices for the super expensive freight charges. So how do other places like PBK do freight at realistic prices?

As to all the suggestions by people in yesterdays thread, I'm not prepared to take the chance that it is some sort of technical error and that they won't really charge me $300 to ship a set of wheels or $170 for some socks. I want to know the proper price up front or I'm not buying.

Also, how do these freight forwarding companies work? Anyone used them? I would think they would be even more expensive as they have to make a profit so obviously put a charge on whatever the freight company decides to charge.

I just did a quick calculation on myus.com based on 2kg weight and it was <$50. They say on the website " This calculator should be used for reference purposes only. The actual cost may vary based on any additional services, packaging charges and/or dimensional weight. "

Has anyone (Katriona?) got the direct link on gear-addicts.com where freight forwarding is discussed?

Where would we be without wishful thinking? Here's an idea, posted by Katriona, that I think bears repeating. An interesting proposal, and one worthy of consideration.

Katriona said, in her post "Shipping" (June 9, 2008):

"It'd be cool if... you buy one item, you pay full shipping. Second item that (same) day gets you reduced shipping, third item earns you free shipping for the rest of the (same) day."

+1 for same-day combined shipping, and/or multiple purchase shipping discount, and/or free shipping with minimum same-day purchase.

What do you think?

Any time in the future? Tomorrow? That would be awesome. Conti GP4000s or maybe some Michelin Krylion Carbons.
